12 Days of Christmas 2020 style
On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A Partridge in a Pear Tree
We can all agree that 2020 has been challenging for us. I don’t know about you but I’m thinking about Christmas earlier than usual this year. It’s clear we all need something positive, festive and fun to look forward to. Here’s my tips for making this year a Christmas to remember for all the right reasons.
A Partridge in a Pear Tree
Get your Christmas tree out of storage and let’s get decorating. As a busy working mum I must admit that decorating can sometimes feel more like a chore than a Joyeux Noël. Make time early this season, rope in the gang to help (bribe them with treats if needed) and get that partridge in that tree! Maybe put a little music on and serve nibblies - you know where I’m heading with this - make it a ‘thang’ and use this time to reflect on the year and to plan for the next couple of weeks.
Two Turtle Doves
Turtle Doves are a symbol of love, friendship and devotion. They will stay together for a lifetime, which is part of the reason they are considered a sign of faithful and bonded love. Celebrate this symbol in your life - show an act of kindness for two people in your life in the lead up to Christmas. Do something unexpected and thoughtful to help spread the christmas spirit and just soak in ‘dem warm fuzzy feelings that you know you love!
Three French Hens
Faith, Hope, and Charity - let’s focus on Charity today. At this time last year Aussie’s were battling some of the most devastating drought and bushfires in memory. In January we had collectively donated nearly $500 million for bushfire relief. But what about this Christmas - COVID-19 has affected families in many different ways, some more devastating than others. If you can’t afford to make a cash donation this year that’s ok! Maybe consider an act of charity instead, for example volunteering your time to help a local organisation is always appreciated.
Four Calling Birds
Ok let’s get this party started - and no I’m not recommending that you order 4 toy boys/ call girls...but each to their own I guess. Let’s call (not text, dm, or tag) 4 friends and have a real conversation! Yep, pick up the phone and dial a number. It will bring you joy!
Five Golden Rings
No, don’t hang up that phone after 5 rings - wait on!
If I were young(er) this heading would set me to thinking about jewellery. But I’m gonna go with donuts today! Yes, literally - I’m taking donuts into work for a little surprise morning tea. They will be decorated with the Christmas theme of course! Here are some Pinterest ideas to help you bring some golden rings to your life! It doesn't HAVE to be donuts...Maybe make a wreath, or pancakes. Just get creative and share.
Six Geese a Laying
Oh my gawd, I googled ‘eggs & Christmas’ and fell down a rabbit hole. Save me I can’t get away from food today!
It seems the best Aussie use for eggs at Christmas time is our much loved pavlova (sorry Kiwi’s we’re claiming it). I found a kilojoulion (see what I did there) recipes and toppings online but this one is my favourite for 2020:
Seven Swans a Swimming
2020 has many new common language phrases, one of them even my doctor uses is Covid Kilo’s. During the lead up to Christmas try to make time for yourself and for exercise. Celebrations should be guilt free this year and the best way to enjoy the aforementioned pav is to get some exercise points on the board. I’m swimming laps this summer - I’m all decked out with new togs, an apple watch to record my every stroke and of course my Aussie Bronze tan to help me feel confident as I dash from my towel to the pool. What exercise plan do you have?
BTW - I definitely don’t swim as graciously as a swan, but I get in and have an old Aussie Go... Oi Oi Oi!
How I think I look swimming laps
Eight Maids a Milking
I’m going to stretch this one to suit - Many hands make light work. If you’re super busy or a feeling a little overwhelmed with your To Do List please call on your friends and family to help out. Team work makes the dream work.
Nine Ladies Dancing and Ten Lords a Leaping
Do I need to say more? Celebrate making it through the worst year this century, do like Taylor Swift and Shake It Off
Eleven Pipers Piping
Do you remember what Christmas felt like as a child, when life was innocent and magical? The time before carols became annoying and photo’s taken with Santa were an adventure? Spend 11 hours spreading that feeling amongst people around you. Wish them a Merry Christmas, ask about their plans for the holidays, sing along to the carols in the supermarket. Spread the Joy of Christmas and you will receive it back tenfold.
Twelve Drummers Drumming
On the Twelfth Day of Christmas my true love gave to me...Twelve Drummers Drumming, Eleven Pipers Piping, Ten Lords a Leaping, Nine Ladies Dancing, Eight Maids a Milking, Seven Swans a Swimming, Six Geese a laying, FIVE GOLD RINGS! Four Calling Birds, Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves. And a Partri - dge in a Pear Treeeeeee!
We hope that you and your loved ones, far and wide, have a very special and joyful Christmas. It’s been a challenging 12 months, take time to celebrate life & to reflect and recharge.
Bring on 2021!
