Food, alcohol and your skin
Okay, let’s be real, self isolation/quarantine/lockdown/Easter whatever you want to call it; we’ve all over indulged during the past weeks as we navigate our way through this pandemic. More than ever we find ourselves in the kitchen nomming down on chocolates and other treats or cracking open a bottle of bubbles earlier than usual (is 11am too early? Asking for a friend).

Now don’t get me wrong, no-one is judging you on your weight or whether your jeans are a bit too snug, we want to focus on skin here at AUSSIE BRONZE. Let’s take a quick look at what we can eat (& drink!) to help our skin feel and look luxurious. By incorporating a few of these healthy foods into your diet your skin will actually glow from the inside out!
Vitamin C is also a super antioxidant. It is needed to promote radiant skin by supporting the immune system to help blemishes heal properly. The best sources are blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes. Vitamin C is needed to produce collagen that strengthens the capillaries that supply the skin. Did you see that? Collagen - the natural filler!
Eat a rainbow of foods
Not literally of course! But an easy way to get back on the path to healthy skin is to incorporate as many different coloured fruits and vegetables as you can. Fruit and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants that help to protect skin from the cellular damage caused by sunlight and pollutants and harmful chemicals used in daily life.
You’ll go nuts for this one
Most nuts are packed with antioxidants like selenium, vitamins E & C, but they also help to increase metabolic rates and protect the nervous system. Studies suggest that a selenium-rich diet can help to protect against skin cancer, sun damage and age spots. Snack on a few of these each day to beat those cravings between meals, and keep skin looking fabulous. Look for brazil nuts, almonds, hazelnuts and pine nuts. Hmm, I wonder if that includes Nutella...
Omega-3 and omega-6 fats are essential in achieving a glowing complexion. These are essential fatty acids, which mean they cannot be made in the body and must be obtained through the diet. You will find omega-3s in oily fish such as tuna, sardines, and salmon. Plant-based sources include linseed and their oil, walnuts and rapeseed oil. Omega-3 fats encourage the body to produce anti-inflammatory compounds, which may help inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Eating 1-2 serves of oily fish or (recommendation) per week can help to treat your skin and keep your diet in-check.
Carbs - the enemy or not?
The glycaemic index (GI) is a system that ranks carbohydrate-based foods on how slowly or quickly they are broken down in the body into glucose. Try to eat plenty of beans, pulses, oats and other low-GI, slow-releasing carbohydrates. Avoid high-GI carbohydrates like biscuits and sugary drinks, as they lead to production of insulin, which may damage collagen and accelerate wrinkles. Technically not food, but we all know what to do here people! Even mild dehydration will cause your skin to look dry, tired and slightly grey. Drink six to eight glasses + of water a day to help flush toxins from the body.
Different alcohols have different effects on the skin, but as a general rule, the clearer the better: Vodka, gin and tequila get out of your system quicker. If you're going to drink anything, in my opinion, drink vodka that doesn't have a grain in it, like a potato vodka. It's a lot clearer and smoother, so it gets in and out of your body quicker.
Believe it or not, a glass of red wine keeps you looking young since it's full of antioxidants that fight ageing and restore collagen. Also, wine helps to maintain elastic fibers that give skin its elasticity.
Gin (my current fave) is made from juniper berries that give gin its distinct flavour and are said to be super foods that improve blood circulation to the face, making it look youthful. (haha fingers crossed)
While you should obviously drink it in moderation, tequila is actually one of the best alcohols for you. Tequila can help lower blood sugar, help you lose weight, treat colds and help you fall asleep.
Listen, I'm the first to admit getting drunk is fun af, and I want you to have a good time -- just make wise alcohol-related choices if you want to look and feel your best.
And drink lots of water!
...and maybe put away that block of chocolate.
