We all want gorgeous flawless, tanned skin and we know that sunbaking is bad for us. Exposure to the harsh sun can cause premature ageing, sunspots and skin cancer, not to forget really painful sunburn. As the push against sun tanning has become more and more prominent, we have turned to sunless tanning, the fake bake and the body bronzers. No matter what you call it, flawlessly tanned skin is in, but at what cost?
Is a fake tan the safer alternative to lying out in the sun and exposing your skin to those UV rays? How safe is fake tan really? The active ingredient in fake tan is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is the substance that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in the skin cells (and also responsible for that biscuity/yeasty odour, too!) ABC News, in the US a few years ago reported DHA has the potential to cause genetic alterations and DNA damage according to a report. Other reports have claimed when using DHA products, special care should be taken to avoid inhaling, ingesting, or getting it in your eyes – especially when using sprays. At Aussie Bronze, we’re finding more and more women (especially spray tan therapists) are increasingly becomming allergic to DHA, coming up in hives or a rash in the pores of their skin.
Fake tan (with DHA) and laser hair removal don’t mix – if you apply fake tan before a laser hair removal appointment, you’re increasing your risk of blisters and burns. ‘Self-tanning products darken the surface of the skin, and when this happens it creates a competing target for the light energy of the laser, the other target is the colour in the hair.’ Using a wash off bronzer allows you to apply straight after laser therapy and have that instant glow as you walk out of the clinic.
Keeping your cosmetics and skin care as close to nature as possible is always the best policy. There are so many hidden nasties and potentially harmful chemicals that pose the possibility of an allergic reaction and affect your immune system in other ways.
Sticking to a natural, organic bronzing product like Aussie Bronze, with ingredients that love your skin, is the only way to keep your skin safe and allergy-free all year round. Aussie Bronze is packed with nature’s finest plant based ingredients…
